Executive Architect

  • Acts as owner’s representative to manage overall project, consultants, agencies and contractor(s) to ensure owner’s schedule and budget are met.
  • Guidance for clients who are not familiar with the design and construction process or simply don’t have the time to be actively involved.
  • For agencies, districts, municipalities, etc. who do not have a qualified staff member.
  • Experience in most project types; particularly education facilities (see Projects List).

Master Planning

  • Visioning and goal setting.
  • Implementation Plan.
  • Financial projections.
  • Construction schedules/phasing plan.
  • Establish space/office standards.

Architectural Programming

  • Programming is, “defining the problem to be solved by design”.
  • Have developed an innovative three-step process for documenting the program.
  • Programming translates the owner’s vision and needs for the project into a format that guides the design effort.
  • The designer should never be the programmer. 

Feasibility Study

  • Abbreviated programming followed by cost estimate based upon area cost per building/room type.
  • Determines if the envisioned project matches the funds available.
  • Can recommend modifications to match project scope to funds available. 

Building Standards

  • Usually for clients with a long-term building program.
  • Establish standard specifications for common materials, products, equipment and systems for ease of maintenance and stocking.
  • Can coordinate a team of engineers.

Facility Condition Assessments

  • Collaborate with client to establish scope for assessment.
  • Establish grading criteria and priorities.
  • Accessibility review.
  • Can coordinate a team of engineers.

Constructibility Review

  • Are your building systems detailed in accordance with published industry standards?
  • Is your building envelope truly waterproof, and will it stay that way when sealants degenerate?
  • Have you created any conditions that will lead to mold?

Plan Review

  • Architectural only or coordinate a team of engineers for full document review.
  • Conduct during Schematic Design Phase, Design Development Phase and/or Construction Document Phase. 
  • Includes building code review.
  • Reduce errors and omissions.

DSA Back-check

  • A thorough understanding of DSA procedures.
  • Have developed excellent relationships with DSA staff members. 
  • Remote firms can save a lot of travel time.

Construction Administration

  • 30 years of experience building good relations with clients and contractors.
  • Progress reports and payments.
  • Experience dealing with field issues.

Shooting Range Design

  • While in Virginia for over five years Michael worked for a firm that had three indoor shooting ranges and the largest indoor “shoot house” on the East coast.
  • They leased the facility from the owner/builder who was inexperienced in range design and, among other problems, the ventilation did not meet OSHA standards.
  • As an architect who had designed a police department shooting range, Michael was the lead for several years of legal battles and many attempts by the owner to make the ranges compliant with OSHA standards. He was also the OSHA compliance officer and developed an innovative process to meet the OSHA requirements.
  • From all this experience, Michael can humbly say there aren’t a handful of architects in the country who understand range design, range ventilation and range operations, as well as he does.
